A man cannot be the master of everything. Our lives are too short, and mortality is too limiting to allow us to master each and every craft or knowledge.
The talents of individuals fall in many different categories. The classic saying of "Those who can't do, teach" underscores the point - though it is not entirely true. Those with great gun game should be on the field. Those who understand how to use those skills to the greatest advantage of the team lead. Those with tactical understandings call the shots and make decisions even when the people on the ground - the ones with great gun game - may not see or understand the direction.
That direction may be to stay put and guard a point, even when all the action is elsewhere; because the person in charge knows that they can count on that skill to hold the point. Or maybe it is to lead a charge that will end in utter defeat because that is what needs to happen to distract the enemy and open another front for attack. Pawns or Knights, they all have their purpose - and that is to serve the master that wields them. For ill or good rarely does one person have max stats in all desired traits, but even then sometimes good gun game and huge knowledge base do intersect.
Those in the CPM were voted to their positions because of their understanding of many parts of the game, not just the meat grinder slaying bit, and that collectively their knowledge base was sufficient to represent most of the players of Dust514. In these positions what is needed is the right tool for the job, and here that tool needs and expanded understanding of the mechanics of the game combined with the interrelation of all the classes and activities... an awesomely powerful slayer that has the respect of the community and sufficient knowledge base to represent the community - as would be seen in forum posts - has yet to be found, or at least not around at the time of elections. Therefore, that single aspect is not shown.
But the CPM was put together none the less. Despite our frustrations that our "buddies" will not disclose anything - even secretly to true friend, because that is trust?... (sarcasm) - I trust them even more because of it. And you are right that TRUST is at play. Either one trusts or one does not; my reason for trust comes from years of forum posts and interactions. If trust in only given because of special treatment then the foundation will break under pressure or silence. But if it is based on history then we are fortunate that those in the CPM now have been very vocal about their support of the game for quite some time.
Certainly I see what is at stake. Even the ethics at play. One ethical dilemma I remember from one course was, "If you are a manager and know that your best friend is going to be fired that day how do you proceed in the relationship?" Do you stop your friend before he makes a large purchase? Do you tell him and risk your position a the company or allow him to sabotage current operations? This silence from CCP and the CPM on the future of the game is certainly not as serious or as difficult to live with. Games, like gambling, should only be played for enjoyment and not investment purposes (just like lottery tickets say). And though I have invested in this game blood, sweat, tears, cash, and time (oh so much time) I will have to use my Bound Optimism in the belief that the CPM is acting appropriately.
Then watch The Imitation Game - about a small group in WWII that knew all of the German communications and had to knowingly sacrifice thousands to ultimately win the war. Amazing movie.

Just thinking about CCP and them not saying anything and how it would affect the internal workings of the company. I'm pondering on the business plans.
To announce a port or the end of the game publicly, before the memo reached Shanghai would be interesting. Disastrous, but interesting. But more than likely the Dust teams will be updated as to the games status before the public is aware. With and end date of 1 month to 6 months, depending on severance or internal transfer opportunities, we would see some of the known CCP EEs (employees) moving to other firms or begin posting in the forums of other CCP projects. 7 months and beyond there would be little rush as that is a significant amount of time to be able to set up transfers internally and prepare quieter exits - despite the NDA all former EEs would still be under.
Would CCP bring Dust to and end with a batch of fixes? A scheduled rollout of goals before support was ended? Or would it be immediate? - I would lean towards the scheduled rollout and a support schedule as the population dwindled. If it was to die.
but... IFF CCP is/will be working on the next FPS iteration in the EVE Universe
Then: Awesome.
A few factors that have me pondering about a delay for a port or new offering are:
Sony Contract
If Sony is the hang up and CCP wants to get out of the contract: Sony Contract and Time? Who knows how much the Sony contract has tied the hands of CCP in this deal. Maybe the contract opted for a support time line, like until 1/1/2017 and until then CCP can't compete with another offering (a standard non compete clause). If that is indeed a deal then even if there is a port in the works CCP couldn't announce it until the end of Dust514 Sony support as Sony makes money off of CCP making money... it is also possible that CCP is just locked in at a fixed price for a defined period of time; whether they profit or not (then profit = reason to port). Meaning that Time, and only Time is the determining factor.
or Sony Contract and Population/$? Perhaps Dust must be allowed to die. There may be a population terminal level or a fund termination level, meaning that regardless of the timeline until either critically low level is hit there is no end to the Dust514 game and Sony will have the right to offer it until the termination of the PS3 PSN support.
or Non Compete with Sony? With a non compete clause CCP couldn't announce or offer an FPS in the New Eden universe unless it was a whole new experience in which FPS was only part of it. There would be some legal talks for sure about definitions and similarities that would need to be addressed and subsequently the game would be advertised as something like a FPUniverse like a star citizen or something.
Ending the relationship. There may be a way to get out of the contract if needed. Handing over the rights to the game (as is) in order to begin another project. Or even just offering dedicated support until the game dies while CCP works on a new one. Maybe the ending contract would be a port to the PS4 console and working out the bugs and kinks for a certain amount of time. (shrug shoulders) who knows?
Perhaps CCP will sell Dust as it did the Vampire game it was working on... and another company will do what CCP could not, or chose not to do.
Then Again...
Then again, Maybe the Sony Contract is nothing but beneficial to CCP. Those adopting this technology (ps3) at the end of its life cycle may keep Dust514 living on. But whether that is merely life support or not - we would have to see the #s.
Halo 2 went on for years until Microsoft set an end date for the servers. But it was worth it to introduce new players to the Halo universe by buying a cheap used game and then Microsoft watched as these new customers bought the 360 to keep up with the series. This may be that opportunity. - without the RROD
If it is still beneficial then we may see a port or a new FPS offering WHILE maintaining Dust514 on the PS3 for the late adopters. Business is to make a buck where you can and when you can, and if keeping a game on life support is profitable it will remain there. However, as the veteran playerbase falls off there must be another offering to capture that potential profit or that customer base will be lost forever... well at least there will be % of loss that cannot be recaptured over time - what that is would require #'s that we don't have. That % will taper and then plunge as it increases exponentially over a long enough period of time, and some people are already there.
In a world of 1 new COD's every year, and Halo's that continue to come out every 2 or 3 years, a game like this needs content injections and updates on a similar level - and at times it needs to be completely destroyed and rebuilt anew (replacing Legacy code with a new game). Everyone wants this.
It is in CCP's best interest to start anew. Fund the teams, build a better product, then build up the anticipation, share some info, - even just some teasers - as to what will be next.
The Phoenix will Rise. ... Just tell us when CCP
